PROTECT T he number of accidental firearm deaths has fallen significantly in recent years, even though the number of Americans who own firearms has increased. According to the National Safety Council, during the past two decides, the number of accidental deaths involving firearms (not counting homicide and suicide) has dropped 42 percent. A number of factors are credited with the decline, including better education, better safety products and increased emphasis in selling safety. That safety emphasis is very important for all gun owners, according to Larry Hyatt, president of Hyatt Coin & Gun in Charlotte, N.C., especially when it comes to firearm enthusiasts who have children in their home, or might have children in their home at some point. “Some gun owners might think their kids know how to handle a gun, so they don’t need a safety vault or lock box,” Hyatt said. “But the kids could have friends over who don’t know anything about guns; plus, it’s illegal in many states.” Indeed, in some states it is a crime to leave a firearm within the reach or easy access of a child. The only way to protect customers from breaking the law or, much worse, unintentionally harming a child is to sell them the proper equipment to safely store their guns. Secure, But Quick Access At Hyatt Coin & Gun, which has been in business for more than 50 years and is renowned for its top-notch customer service, safety is a part of every gun sale. “We have a separate area in our store for safes, gun vaults and boxes that are specifically designed for locking the gun away in an automobile,” Hyatt said. “They all have fake training guns inside, and we show the customer how the products work. Every gun sale gets the same treatment.” Hyatt’s small vault and lock box inventory includes models from American Security, Gardall, GunVault, KwikVault, SmartTouch, Stack-On and Secure Logic’s Wall Vault Biometric Safe. Thirty percent of Hyatt’s customers purchase a small vault for their gun.
