A DAYTO TO “THANKS” Honored American American Veterans Veterans Afield Afield Honored Hosts First First Annual Annual Family Family Day Day Hosts an Antonio, Texas, home of the Alamo and other historical landmarks and events, is now the birthplace of the First Annual National Family Day for Honored American Veterans Afield (HAVA). Held at the National Shooting Complex in October, HAVA hosted 43 disabled veterans/soldiers and their families for a day filled with activities. The events included shooting demonstrations, range time and musical entertainment. Wounded veterans and soldiers from across Texas and as far away as Colorado Springs, Colo., participated in the event, which drew both national and local support. Fifteen companies in the shooting sports industry participated, plus representatives from the Texas National Guard, Wounded Warriors Project, Brothers of Fallen Heroes, Texas Paralyzed Veterans Association, VFW, USA Shooting, U.S. 52 SAY Army Marksmanship Unit and the Single Action Shooters Society. During the morning, HAVA guests were treated to shooting exhibitions from the U.S. Army Marksmanship Unit, along with professional shooters Jerry Miculek, Rob Leatham, Todd Jarrett, Shari LeGate and Olympian Keith Sanderson. Then veterans and their families spent the afternoon on the firing line, rotating through six shooting stations. They fired AR-style rifles, semiautomatic pistols, revolvers, shotguns, various rimfire firearms, single-actions and lever-action rifles. Children in attendance also were able to participate in a separate shooting stage, featuring airsoft guns. In the evening, guests enjoyed dinner along with musical entertainment from country music recording artist Chris Abbondanza (Abby).
