On Nov. 3, 2008 — we think city officials had to check their figures several times before they believed it — the city of Miami, Fla., logged ZERO murders for the month of October! Miami hasn’t had a murder-free month in 40 years. Overall, violent crime is down and has been on a downward trend for some time. MPD reported 55 homicides for the year as of November 3, down from 87 last year. As we all should recall, when Florida adopted a “shall issue” concealed weapons permit policy, the gun-grabbers shrieked about how the streets would run red in rivers of blood with Wild West shootings on every corner. Then Florida passed a “Castle Doctrine” law, another move predicted to result in near-genocide levels of violence. They even affirmed a right to self-defense — without the requirement to flee first! Yeah, Florida in general and Miami in particular were written off by the “experts” who bemoaned the mayhem to come. Only, uh . it didn’t. And judging from gun purchases and concealed-carry permits issued, Miami’s gotta be hip-deep in firearms. Meantime, in the progressive socialist city of Chicago, where only politicians, cops and crooks may possess handguns, stats-watchers expect the 2008 homicide count to exceed 500 victims. Doesn’t it make sense that a guy with solid experience in being an illegal alien in the U.S. would know how to catch ’em? Well, maybe not. But that’s one of the Hire Me! theories offered by Jugert Haxhiu, an Albanian who applied for a position with the Border Patrol. Oh, he didn’t say that in his application — he claimed to be a citizen on that. It was only after a routine background investigation discovered he had been ordered out of the country in 2004 and had since then been a federal fugitive that he came up with that story.
