Hall exhibits fierce dedication to the gun industry and advises other gun dealers to “understand how lucky you are to be involved. There is a great history in our sport that goes back to the founders of our country. There is great honor in it.” Hall reminds himself and customers of this with a sign bearing the words “Duty, Tradition, Heritage” that hangs in H&H’s lobby. “The ultimate deal is you have to be proud of what you’re doing — not proudarrogant, but proud that you’re a part of something special,” Hall said. Hall’s pride in the sport and the industry drives the continuing expansion at H&H, which currently fills a 50,000-square-foot building. A 3-D archery range will be completed next year, and Hall plans to offer a booking agency for hunts and other trips for gun enthusiasts. Hall has been part of such conversions. He tells the story of an adamant anti-gun reporter who was hesitant to hold a gun during a television segment he was filming at H&H 17 years ago. After Hall gave him a quick tutorial on stance and grip, the reporter tentatively asked if he could fire the gun. “When he fired, it was like a religious conversion. His smile went ear-to-ear,” Hall said. “I had never caught a really big fish at that point in my life, but I imagined that’s what it would have felt like.” While Hall has ambitious plans for the future, he continues to stick with and emphasize the basics that sparked H&H’s initial success: attracting first-time shooters by creating an atmosphere that provides education and entertainment. “You’re either moving or you’re dying,” Hall said, with his ever-present enthusiasm. “We’ve still got lots to do.
