While Taurus has introduced numerous headline-grabbing firearms, The Judge has bested many of company’s more-touted self-defense guns. “We can’t believe the good reaction we’ve received for The Judge,” Morrison said. “It may be the best self-defense gun we’ve ever had.” Taurus offers The Judge in several models. The Model 4510TKR will handle 2 1/2- and 3-inch .410 shotshells and .45 Colt, offering a powerful handgun for self-defense. You can handle The Judge and Taurus’ new products at the company’s SHOT Show booth 4251. For more information, visit www.taurususa.com. Swarovski Knows Classy NSSF’s Scholastic Program A Hit S warovski doesn’t do cheap and it doesn’t do wimpy, even in its smallest binoculars. For 2008, the company is wrapping its Pocket Tyrol in Italian leather, presenting an elegant — yes, I used that word — optic that has the highest “must-have” factor. In addition to its looks, the Pocket Tyrol has Swarovski’s sophisticated lens system: 16 lenses treated with SWAROBRIGHT, SWARODUR and SWAROTOP coatings. Translated: bright, high-contrast images. The binoculars measure 2.2x3.97 inches and weigh 8 oz. Sure, Swarovski has other new products for 2008, which you can see at SHOT Show booth 3413, but it’s worth visiting the booth just to pick up the Pocket Tyrol. Visit www.swarovskioptik.com for more information on all Swarovski products. C ongratulations to NSSF and its partners in the Scholastic Clay Target Program (SCTP). In early August, the program held its National Trapshooting Championships, with more than 1,600 young shooters competing from 29 states. Competition was held in four divisions Aug. 6-7 at the World Shooting and Recreational Complex in Sparta, Ill. “These young shooters not only competed against SCTP teams from around the country, they battled through wind, heat and nerves, and still put up impressive scores. In fact, over 300 shooters broke 190 or better out of 200 targets, and one shooter, Matt Bartholow of Rapid City, S.D., ran 200 straight,” said Zach Snow of NSSF. Missouri finished the competition with the most winning teams (4), including one national champion. Launched by NSSF in 2000, SCTP offers students in grades 12 and under an opportunity to compete as a team in trap, skeet, sporting clays and the international versions of trap and skeet. Program partners include the national governing bodies for each shotgun discipline: Amateur Trapshooting Association, National Skeet Shooting Association, National Sporting Clays Association and USA Shooting. This is a great program, one that pays dividends for the industry. Consider the program’s goal of “instilling in young participants a commitment to safe firearm handling, teamwork and leadership.” That’s good for everyone. Just Say No Award T he Shooting Industry Academy of Excellence is now accepting entries for its 2008 awards (page 14). The prestigious awards, now in their 17th year, have grown in stature. Industry leaders tell us it’s the award they most covet, because of the voting process and the integrity of the academy. Since 1994, I’ve had the honor of helping to present the awards, which recognize companies and individuals who have been voted by the industry as the best of the best. For most of those award ceremonies, I’ve joined Randy Moldé, the academy’s director, to present the awards. Randy has a — well how should I say this — a unique sense of humor. Each year, he places in the awards Randy Moldé presents the “Just Say No Award.” ceremony a bit of humor. At the 2007 awards he presented the “Just Say No Award” in honor of the 2008 presidential election. Rather than tell you about “Randy’s Humor,” you may view it and the “Just Say No Award” on our Web site, www.shootingindustry.com.
