The title of the e-mail: Grandpa Teaches Them Young. Roy, I just thought you would like to see that out here we teach them young and we teach them right. Kelly Flint Via: americanhandgunner.com Teaching Them Right I think Massad Ayoob is just being an apologist for the ammunition industry (Lethal Force, “Explaining Today’s Ammo Prices To Customers,” Dec. 2007). Yes, the price of lead has gone up slightly. The dollar has taken a hit and the auto industry is building more lead-acid batteries. But not so much that one would expect all the manufacturers to increase the price of ammo as much as it has. In one fell swoop both our local WalMart and Dick’s Sporting Goods raised the prices of their Remington and Winchester shotshells by over 40 percent. This smells of something other than ordinary inflation or “increased demand,” as Mr. Ayoob puts it. I shoot skeet and trap and sporting clays weekly. This is not a once-a-year usage. This impacts my hobby big time. Guns have not gone up 40 percent. Cars have not gone up 40 percent. Food has not gone up 40 percent. Only gasoline has gone up as much. And something is amiss in the gasoline business, too! Not Happy Please don’t tell me I should be happy with the “relative bargain” I am getting today. I work in non-union manufacturing. My salary today is no higher than it was in 1988. And benefits have gone down. No argument you present will convince me to be happy with a 42-percent increase in ammo costs. Jim C. Via: russ@shootingindustry.com No one is happy with the increase in ammunition, but it seems reasonable to explain what is driving the jump in ammo prices. Four years ago, copper sold for around 20 cents a pound. In the fall of 2007, it was around $3.30 a pound. During the same time, lead jumped from around 40 cents a pound to $1.80 a pound. 9 E-mail the Editor russ@shootingindustry.com 6 APRIL 2008 Circle No. 211 on Inquiry Card www.shootingindustry.com
<a10:updated>2008-09-22T22:13:42+02:00</a10:updated>

Shooting Industry April 2008 Page 7

It’s a revolver – and a shotgun – it’s the ultimate combo handgun. Ammunition manufacturers have made clear that any attempt to place a serial number on each of the more than 10 billion rounds of ammunition manufactured every year in the United States would lead to bankruptcy. NSSF, by cultivating a strong grassroots force of sportsmen and gun-owners, along with solid support and testimony from the nation’s leading ammunition manufacturers, has succeeded in countering legislation that supports the technology, most recently in Maryland. “This is a significant legislative victory for our industry,” said Lawrence G. Keane, NSSF senior V.P. and general counsel, referring to the Maryland’s Judiciary Com- mittee’s decision to vote down the state’s bullet serialization bill (HB 517). In defeating the bill, the committee rejected the testimony of Russell Ford, who holds the patent on the technology. Maryland Delegate Michael D. Smigiel Sr. (R) “I hope that you never make a dime, sir.” chastised Ford, saying, “I hope that you never make a dime, sir.” Maryland Delegate Christopher B. Shank (R) reminded committee members that the state “already has a ballistic ‘fingerprint’ system that doesn’t help solve crimes.” “Maryland joins several other states, most recently Hawaii, in recognizing that bullet serialization is not practical and simply bad public policy,” Keane said. In written testimony, NSSF presented the root of its opposition to the ammunition-banning legislation: “If manufacturers had to comply with bullet serialization, NSSF estimates that it would take over three weeks to manufacture what is currently produced in a single day. This massive reduction in ammunition would translate into substantially lower sales and profitability, and ultimately force major ammunition manufacturers to abandon the market. In turn, there would be a severe shortage of serialized ammunition and all consumers, including federal, state and local law enforcement agencies, would be faced with substantial price increases. Ammunition will go from costing pennies to several dollars per cartridge.” For more information on Bullet Serialization, visit www.nssf.org and click on the “Media Resources” link on the home page. Olin Announces Fourth Quarter Earnings I n late January, Olin Corp. announced its fourth quarter 2007 income from continuing operations was $29.6 million or $0.40 per diluted share. That compares to $15.6 million or $0.22 per diluted share in the fourth quarter of 2006. Sales from continuing operations in the fourth quarter of 2007 were $404.8 million, compared to $247.1 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. “I am pleased that both our Chlor Alkali and Winchester businesses finished 2007 on a strong note. Winchester earned $2.7 million in the quarter and completed its best year since 1994. During the quarter, Winchester benefited from higher selling prices and stronger-than-expected demand, which more than offset higher commodity and manufacturing costs,” said Joseph D. Rupp, Olin chairman, president and CEO. Winchester fourth quarter 2007 sales were $102.7 million, compared to $93.3 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. According to Olin, commercial and law enforcement sales increased during the quarter compared to the fourth quarter of 2006. Fourth quarter 2007 military sales were approximately equal to the fourth quarter of 2006. Winchester’s fourth quarter 2007 profit was $2.7 million compared to $2.6 million in the fourth quarter of 2006. Higher selling prices offset the impact of higher commodity and manufacturing costs and a less favorable product mix. For more information, visit www.olin.com and www.winchester.com. A few years ago, several companies began making solid-copper bullets, while others started producing frangible bullets made of compressed copper powder or powdered iron. At the same time, some of the earlier military contracts for lead-free frangible ammunition created product opportunities in the civilian market. The military was far ahead of the curve in seeing the benefits of ammo with no lead and no ricochets. A number of companies offer lead-free frangible ammunition, however, some of them restrict their sales to the military and law enforcement. Over the years, we’ve used a number of brands here, and presently use Fiocchi, BVAC Inc., International Cartridge, SinterFire and UltraMax. We do sell lead-free frangible ammunition to customers and that will increase as more calibers and brands become available for commercial sales. The only negative result of this long green road has been higher ammunition costs. Lead-free, frangible cartridges are expensive, about the same cost as major brand hollow points. Requiring the use of lead-free, frangible ammunition has driven up the cost of shooting at our range. And not having cheap range ammo available has clearly cost us a Tom Allen (left) assists a customer who gives an few customers. The bulk of the residue from our traps can go in the dumpster, as can our vacuum filters. The entire store is cleaner. Customers and our neighbors are safe from being contaminated. Now, the only time an OSHA or EPA inspector shows up is to be a customer. We advertise fairly heavily the fact that our range is “lead free” and since we made the switch to “being green,” overall business has increased each year. That has drawn the attention of other range operators. The two days before the SHOT Show in February, we were swamped, mostly with dealers “kicking our tires” and learning what we’re doing. That’s okay. We’re glad to share what we’ve done if it helps others. 9 Not Grandpa’s Old Angle-Head. applicants using calibers that are not yet available lead free, which only amounts to about 200 rounds a week. At this point, some of our ammunition still comes with small amounts of lead in the primer, as truly reliable, completely lead-free primers are not always available. Other than these small exceptions, we are completely lead free. Despite this, we still use most of the lead protocols: HEPA vacuums, rubber gloves and respirators to clean the range, using rubber gloves while cleaning or repairing our rental firearms, and requiring a lot of hand washing. The Gun Store uses a number of lead-free, frangible brands including SinterFire, which now offers only bullets, International Cartridge and Fiocchi. www.shootingindustry.com Circle No. 213 on Inquiry Card
<a10:updated>2008-09-22T22:13:42+02:00</a10:updated>

Shooting Industry April 2008 Page 20

Lisa Parsons-Wraith Outstanding Youth Shooter Thanks Gun Dealers Y oung shooters who make a posi- to represent Wyoming at the 2006 4-H Na- bore rifle. And some of her enjoyment of coaching comes from introducing new shooters to the sport. “Newcastle’s grade school has an annual camp, and for the first time they had rifle shooting,” Terry said. “They asked me to come up and coach, and I got to coach a lot of kids who would not normally be on the range. I coach mostly rifle, but I also coach muzzleloading, archery, shotgun and pistol.” Even while maintaining a rigorous training and volunteer schedule, Terry maintains a 4.0 grade-point average and plays clarinet in her high-school band. Terry said she plans to use her scholarship money for college, where she hopes to major in wildlife biology at a university with an active shooting team. Shooting also has kept Terry close to her family. “My friends always ask me why I spend so much time with my parents, and I say it’s because they take me to cool shooting events,” Terry said. “Shooting is our family bonding time.” Being a female expert shot has gotten Terry some mixed reactions. “In my competitive shooting, it’s fun to walk in and know the boys see you as this sweet, innocent girl who shouldn’t be able to handle a gun,” Terry said. “After the competition, though, I almost have to close their mouths for them because I turn out to be a sweet, innocent girl who can handle a rifle very well. Yeah? Well, it gets stupider, way stupider. Everybody in Roswell, Ga., kinda snickers and smiles about the irony of having a Krispy Kreme doughnut dispensary less than a stone’s throw from the back door of the city police station. Surprisingly, it was a local mental midget who shoulda known better who waltzed into the Krispy Kreme last summer, and used the old “pointy fingers under the shirt to simulate a pistol” trick, while announcing a robbery. The clerk emptied the till and forked over the cash. Fists fulla bucks, our hero in crime fled out the front door and almost drowned in a sea of uniforms and rumbling copcruisers. Ya see, it was 3 p.m., which translates into “daywatch-to-p.m. shift change.” It also means the single moment in the 24-hour day when that expanse between the police station and said crime scene was guaranteed to be filled with the highest per-square-foot concentration of predatory patrol cops. Don’t ya just love the way this script reads? He, meaning our prisoner in waiting, shoulda just “assumed the position,” but we’ve already established his level of intelligence, haven’t we? No, this saga didn’t end in a hail of bullets. That wasn’t necessary. Our Crime King took off running and within about five seconds was observed doing three butt-over-baseball-cap unplanned somersaults down a S kudzu-filled steep embankment. There were, of course, lots of offers to fulfill his request. Illustration by Nick Petrosino Yeah, our “professional educators” have done it again. This time, the warmand-fuzzy administrator types at Payne Junior High in Chandler, Ariz., have suspended a 13-year-old boy who drew a doodle of a vaguely gun-like object in pencil on a scrap of paper. The drawing did not include any bullets, blood, muzzle blast, injuries or threats, nor did it target any human, animal or innocent fungus, but school district spokesman Terry Locke said it was “absolutely considered a threat,” and “threatening words or pictures are punishable.” The boy’s father went to the school to discuss the matter with school staff, and said they referred him to the 1999 massacre at Columbine High School and seemed to be drawing a connection to it. He was offended, but then, he’s not a “professional educator.” He’s just a guy with some common sense. We don’t know what they were, possibly something like, “You’re flat and ugly.” Anyway, suddenly things flew totally out of control and the inmate assaulted the door, beating it like a redheaded stepchild. The door never once hit back, but deputies said it clearly won the battle. Good thing it was all caught on tape, because a public defender would never believe his client beat himself up in jail. For 2008, there were 1,950 exhibiting companies, up from last year’s 1,870. NSSF reports that the total registered attendance of 58,769 dwarfs last year’s record-setting attendance of 42,216. There were 30,686 buyers at the show, along with 1,725 members of the media, 25,854 exhibiting personnel and 504 guests. Exhibitors were impressed with the attendance and buying enthusiasm. “The first day was probably the best day Legacy has ever had at the SHOT Show,” said Gene Lumsden, Legacy International president and CEO. “We’re very happy with the reaction to our products. We’re on track to have another very strong year.” “This is a fantastic year for us. The SHOT Show is our show of the year. This is our 30th SHOT Show and we are very proud to be here. Hunting, in general, has been taking more and more importance in the company’s business, and the reaction to our products has been fantastic,” said Brian Lisankie, Aimpoint vice president www.shootingindustry.com of marketing and sales. “Traffic was the strongest we’ve ever seen. Customers were very receptive to our new and standard products. All in all, a very positive show,” said Jason Hornady, Hornady vice president. “Our best show ever. Saturday was the busiest day. The owner actually cancelled his appointments to work the booth. An amazing show. We wrote a record amount of business,” said Scott Pasquale, Amchar Wholesale director of sales. Dealers were equally enthusiastic about the show. “The biggest benefit of the show has been the many contacts I’ve made. Plus, entire lines of products are on display, so we get to touch the products, not just look at them online or in a catalog,” said Chris Dunn, owner of Chevlon Canyon Guns Co., Queen Creek, Ariz. “What I especially like about the show are the contacts I make. Where else can you meet all of the CEOs and other executives? I also can’t say enough about the New Product Center. It offered some tip-offs to some new products that have real potential for my business,” said Bill Powell, owner of World of Sports, Florence, S.C. “There’s no question that the greatest benefit is finding new companies and new products that will sell. I come here to find innovation,” said Doc Blanchard, owner of Doc’s Gun Barn in Pocatello, Idaho. “When we opened the doors of the first SHOT Show, we didn’t know who was going to show up,” Painter said. “But these companies were on hand to form the building blocks of what has become the modern SHOT Show, and year in and year out, we could count on these 80 committed companies to be there to greet the ever-growing, record-setting crowds of attendees.” One of the 80 companies is FMG Publications, publisher of Shooting Industry, American Handgunner, GUNS Magazine and American COP. “We’re proud to have been a part of this since the beginning,” said Tom von Rosen, FMG Publications president. “Contributing to this show’s growth, witnessing the industry’s expansion over the last 30 years At part of the 30th anniversary, NSSF honored 80 companies that have exhibited at every SHOT Show since 1979. The down-home hospitality in a ranch setting included plenty of food, drinks, country-dance lessons, a boot-shine stand and a full-sized horse display and murals. “We wanted a small, old-fashioned country image, which is what we are. We come from a very small town — we’re not the big city type. We wanted to project what we really are: a friendly atmosphere in a country setting,” said Hewitt Grant, Ellett Brothers president and CEO. John Bianchi was at the SHOT Show to help Bianchi International celebrate its 50th anniversary. The “father of the modern holster” spent hours signing collectors’ reprints of the wellknown “Bianchi Histographs” — the landmark ads of 40 years ago that helped propel the company to a worldwide status. “The methods and materials that go into making holsters are the biggest changes I see today,” Bianchi said. “It’s come a long way.” Bianchi made his first holsters by hand in the garage of his southern California home. Remington enjoyed an “outstanding show,” according to Sean Dwyer, a Remington senior vice president. “We always have a good show, but there seemed to be increased interest and excitement in what Remington is doing and its direction. Our trade partners know our new owners are positioning Remington for growth. That means more new and innovative products, which means more sales and greater profitability for our customers,” Dwyer said. At the Leupold booth, dealers swarmed around the expanded VX-L riflescope line and Green River Mojave Binoculars, but were equally attracted to Leupold’s introduction into the lighting market with the new MX Modular Flashlight series. Ruger’s biggest attention-getter at the company’s booth was one of the smallest firearms at the show. The company surprised a lot of distributors and dealers with the debut of the Ruger LCP (Lightweight Compact Pistol). “It is absolutely the hit of the show,” said Steve Sanetti, Ruger president. “It has a lot of advanced features, which is typical of Ruger. We listened to the market and the market said you really ought to get into self-protection. All of our dealers and distributors have been saying Ruger needs to be in that market. So, here it is. The LCP is the real buzz here.” At the Minox booth, Thorsten Kortemeier, Minox managing director, said the German optics company is being recognized for its cutting-edge technology and high-quality binoculars and spotting scopes. “We offer excellent products that have good value for the dealer and the consumer,” Kortemeier said. Minox has gained a following in the United States, under Kortemeier’s leadership, through selective product introductions, like the Minox HG (High Grade) series of binoculars and the MD 40 W Spotting Scope. “Mostly, we want dealers to know they can make 30- to 40-percent profit selling Minox optics. We only offer products that meet very high standards and have a good value and price relationship,” Kortemeier said. At the Taurus booth, Bob Morrison, president and CEO, took every opportunity to show buyers a well-ventilated Birchwood Casey Shoot-N-C target, evidence of the capabilities of The Judge. Chambered to handle .410 shotshells and .45 Colt, the revolver has become a best-seller. “You wouldn’t have thought it would catch on, would you?” www.shootingindustry.com Working The Show Top: Dealers crowd the Sierra Bullets booth. You instantly see what the gun is capable of doing. While we thought it would sell well, I didn’t think it would be this good. It’s the hottest-selling handgun we’ve ever had.” Savage continues to enjoy growing sales of rifles featuring its award-winning AccuTrigger. New for 2008 are the Model 25 Lightweight Varminter, Model 25 Classic and the Rimfire Camo Package. In celebration of its 50th year, Savage has produced 1,000 special-edition Model 110 rifles, which have numerous high-grade features. Marlin drew large crowds with its introduction of the new XL7 Bolt Action. “Traffic has been strong. We had concerns about the Super Bowl in the middle of the show, but it just spread traffic into the last two days,” said Mike Jensen, Marlin vice president of sales and marketing. Smith & Wesson’s display of the new Night Guard Series revolvers during the show delivered a continuous stream of dealers, along with the additions to the M&P line and the i-Bolt rifle. “The SHOT Show is always an exciting time for our company because it serves as a launching platform for a variety of innovative Smith & Wesson and Thompson/ Center products,” said Michael Golden, president and CEO. “This year, our list of new products included a compact version of our highly popular M&P45 polymer pistol. We also launched 10 new variations of our award-winning Thompson/Center ICON bolt-action rifle.” Buck Knives unveiled a new booth at the show, one reflecting a warm, welcoming, family atmosphere. That’s important to CJ Buck, CEO and president, who represents the fourth generation to run the company. “We’re getting back to our core,” CJ said. “We’ve decided that what Buck is has more to do with providing reliable tools to people to allow them to thrive in the outdoors and everyday experiences. That is our focus. You’re going to see more innovative leadership from us in hunting.” What you won’t see from Buck is more tactical knives. “Tactical is becoming less and less of a category for us. It’s not who we are as a company,” CJ said. “Our customers see Buck in a certain way. We are always looking at ways to better reach the market and to help us better understand what product gaps we have and what message we need to be delivering.” One of the knives CJ proudly promotes is the Gen 5, designed by his son, Josh, as an intern project two years ago. “We used it as a special collectible and it was so well received it is now in the line. Browning’s new X-Bolt hunting rifle attracted a lot of attention at the Browning booth, along with the Citori 625 overand-under. In addition, Browning held an elaborate fashion show to highlight its new Transitions clothing line. “What motivated this is for many years, we have produced state-of-the-art, technical outerwear and gotten very little attention,” said Scott Grange, Browning’s public relations and shooting promotions manager. “We decided it was time to let the outdoor writing community know what we actually do have. This new Transitions series we’re offering for 2008 is a spectacular way to introduce folks to technical outerwear. I think we’ve hit a home run today.” At the ATK booth complex, Federal showcased its new Vital-Shok Trophy Bonded Tip big-game bullet, Fusion debuted its 20-gauge sabot slug for deer hunting and RCBS highlighted the R.A.S.S. Shooting Bench. ATK also honored its 2007 Dealer of the Year. For the second year in a row, and the third time in four years, Mike Goschinski, owner of Fin Feather Fur Outfitters, Ashland, Ohio, was presented the Dealer of the Year Award. Carson Optical is enjoying a surge in sales, driven by independent scientific testing that shows the company’s HD (High Definition) binoculars offer superior light transmission. “The testing has done more than we hoped. It not only has encouraged dealers to contact us when they’ve seen the ads, it has encouraged consumers to call directly. If we didn’t have a dealer in that area, we soon had one, because they had an instant customer. The Carson brand has really turned the corner in how much it’s recognized now,” said Tim Faust, Carson sales manager. A million dollars in cash, behind a well-sealed display case, drew dealers to the Lansky Sharpeners booth. “It’s a way of letting dealers know they can make a lot of money selling our sharpeners,” said Bob Kufahl, Lansky sales and marketing director. “We tell dealers, one, you get the Lansky name, which means you get a product that is not only recognized, but accepted by consumers. Two, you get a good quality product and we do a lot of pull-through advertising. It’s profitable. With an accessory like sharpeners, you can make decent margins.” Next year’s SHOT Show will be held at the Orange County Convention Center in Orlando, Fla., Jan. 15-18. Dealers Select Products That Sizzle! PICKS Lee Hinkleman (left), of Otis, shows Mike Etienne, buyer for Turner’s Outdoorsman, the new HardCore Hunter cleaning kits. A t SHOT Show 2008, Shooting Industry’s staff sought out super deals on behalf of dealers, ambushing and interviewing your fellow retailers to get their take on what is hot — and what would sell in their shops. Some of these Dealers’ Picks are genuine 2008 new products; others are triedand-true moneymakers. And, as you know, dealers like to talk about what will pour black ink all over their business ledgers. So, here are these dealers’ “stars” of the SHOT Show. Ettiene rates Otis’ customer satisfaction as “excellent.” “They’ve trained our sales staff, they provide great displays for POPs and end caps, very instructional DVDs, and their national advertising campaign really helps,” Ettiene said. www.otisgun.com Mossberg’s booth was mobbed and Mark Daniels, president of Mega Sports Shooting Equipment & Range in Plainfield, Ill., had to step around the crowd in front of a display of hot-pink stocked .22 Plinkster rifles. Smiling, Daniels said, “I’ve carried Mossberg for 23 years and their awesome growth and expansion has been vital to my business. I truly appreciate that they listen to dealers and customers, hear what they want and respond with new products like the 464 Lever-Action rifle and their fine over-under shotguns. Mossberg’s rapid evolution from input to market is phenomenal, and the quality of the guns is rock-solid.” Daniels said Mossberg’s customer satisfaction is virtually assured. “My customers love the value for the money. Buyer referrals to their friends and family members drive a lot of my sales. And besides the guns, Mossberg accessories are great add-ons, too,” Daniels said. He named Pro-Factor choke tubes as most-wanted items. www.mossberg.com “Can I do a double Dealers’ Pick?” Daniels asked, and led SI to BlackHawk’s O.F. Mossberg & Sons Not many people know that Otis Technology, now a gun-cleaning giant, began with a teenage girl falling into a muddy bog on a deer hunt, fouling her borrowed rifle. She made her own cleaning kit from scratch and a genuine American success story was born. Mike Ettiene, the buyer for Turner’s Outdoorsman’s 13 Southern California stores, knows the story well. SI found him at the Otis booth, checking out the new HardCore Hunter — all-caliber, pocketsized softpack cleaning kits in Mossy Oak and Realtree Camouflage — and Otis’ just-released LifeLiner nano-ceramic fusion gun-bore liner. “The greatest thing about Otis is that they’re never content with a good thing,” Ettiene said. “They’re always coming out with terrific new technology like LifeLiner, and constantly improving their kits. We’ve carried them for years and they’re top sellers. Otis kits are great add-on sales with guns or ammunition, and repeat, refill and resupply sales always follow.” Otis Technology BlackHawk Products Group Mark Daniels, of Mega Sports, selected Mossberg products as his Dealers’ Pick, naming the Pro-Factor Choke Tubes as a great product for add-on sales. Buck Knives offers classic designs like the Gen-5 folder (top), and the stout new Bravo 850 chisel-edged folder. “Gift buyers really go for Buck,” said Ernie Shipman of Renaissance Firearms. booth, where he pointed out the company’s Outdoor & Hunting line. It includes packs, slings, field holsters and accessory pouches designed for sport hunting rather than tactical needs. “I’ve been a BlackHawk Authorized Dealer for years and it was a pleasant surprise to find out how many of my customers want BlackHawk’s durability and quality in their hunting gear,” Daniels said. “They’re selling really well, and the line is growing. Dealers shouldn’t overlook it.” www.blackhawk.com “I was selling Buck Knives out of my sign shop even before I went into the gun business,” said Ernie Shipman, owner of Renaissance Firearms in Gonic, N.H. “Buck’s brand-name recognition and reputation make them an easy sale.” Shipman pursues knife sales ag- Buck Knives gressively. “I plan holiday sales well in advance, and advertise them widely. For Father’s Day and Christmas, particularly, gift buyers really go for Buck because they know it’s the brand their fathers and grandfathers bought,” Shipman said. That’s when I really stock up for those big sales.” Shipman named the Model 110 Folding Hunter and the fixed-blade Alpha Hunter as fast movers. www.buckknives.com High-tech outdoor clothing is a booming field and serious hunters willingly pay some very serious money for well-made garments with moisture-wicking, scentblocking, noise-suppressing features. Up in the high Rockies, add the need for warmth in extremely cold weather to that list, and Jon Edwards, CEO of Schnee’s and Powder Horn Outfitters in Bozeman, Mont., says Sitka Gear is a top choice. “I’m a bowhunter and enthusiastic Sitka Gear user myself and I recommend it to all my customers,” Edwards said. “Most of them are high-country hunters, but Sitka garments are extremely versatile for any activity requiring warmth, light weight and great flexibility. The quality of the materials and thoughtful design features make Sitka a standout and a great seller.” Sitka’s line goes from “skin to snow,” offering base layers, insulation and tough outerwear, with four-way stretch, integrated wind resistance and antimicrobial silver treatment. “My customers have been really pleased and the people at Sitka have been a pleasure to work with,” Edwards said. www.sitkagear.com In Louisiana, deep snow and freezing cold aren’t big concerns, but breathability, scent blocking and silence in the woods are paramount. Robin Simmons, CEO of Simmons’ Sporting Goods in Bastrop, La., said Robinson, with its Whitewater offerings, delivers all that and a nice margin for dealers. “We’re a full-line guns, ammo and equipment store, and high-tech clothes for our dedicated hunters, especially our bowhunters, are a big part of our business,” Simmons said. “Over the past several years, our customers’ demand for quieter materials and more effective scentblocking has coincided with RobinsonWhitewater’s technological development. Our customers love the clothes, and the company’s support is 100 percent. Byers named Cobra’s CA380 .380 Auto Freedom Series and the .45 ACP Patriot as best sellers, along with the C22M derringer chambered in .22 Magnum. “I don’t have to advertise these guns,” Byers said. “Referrals from satisfied customers and repeat buys have been very strong. A wide variety of models ran from the pocketsize 5-inch, 83-lumen Tactical Focus Beam to the 16-inch, 1,068-lumen model X7 “light-cannon.” All featured PTT (Power Transformation Technology) microprocessors producing impressive power and long burn times. An attention-getting demonstration of LED Lenser features in the darkened hall clearly impressed the dealers in attendance. “The variable beam with no dark spots, selectable power, extended run-time and anti-corrosion features will make them very attractive to my customers,” said Robert Joiner, owner of Joiner Optics of Chestertown, Md. “These lights look like a perfect match for their needs. According to Ray Sanchez, sales manager of Cobra Enterprises Of Utah Jensen Arms in Loveland, Colo., Arsenal is doing it right. “In my opinion, Arsenal is kicking out the best AKs on the market, especially their models with milled receivers,” Sanchez said. “We’ve sold several hundred of them and we still have a hard time keeping samples on the shelves between shipments. The demand is that strong. The best part is they’re so problem-free, and on the rare occasion there’s a problem, Arsenal takes care of it right away.” Sanchez was excited about Arsenal’s latest offerings, a pair of folding-stock models with hammer-forged, chromelined barrels designated SLR-107FR in 7.62x39mm, and SLR-106FR in 5.56mm, both equipped with side rail mounts. www.arsenalinc.com Choosing a Dealers’ Pick was easy for Bill Norris, owner of The Professional’s Choice in Atascadero, Calif. “Advantage Tactical Sights are selling themselves,” Norris said. “All I have to do is show them. Perry said he found two great Dealers’ Picks out in “Tent City” — what NSSF elegantly called the Gold Hall. SteriPEN is a battery-operated compact water purifier, which uses ultraviolet (UV) light to neutralize all forms of organic contaminants in water. While UV purification systems have been around for years, until now their excessive bulk, weight, fragility and expense have prohibited convenient field use. According to Perry, SteriPEN has solved those problems handily. “I’m going to clear a couple of feet of display space for this,” he said. “I have lots of customers who will scoop them up. The size, price and performance are right.” www.steripen.com SteriPEN by Hydro-Photon Mike Pappas, manager of Get Some Guns & Ammo, advises dealers to carry Nightforce Optics and be prepared for sales. SPOT Inc. Perry then dragged SI to the furthest row of the rearmost section of the Gold Hall, where he endorsed SPOT Messenger. “SPOT Messenger is an exceptional item and it’s going to be a hot seller straight across the board to hunters, backpackers, campers, travelers and my military and tactical customers,” Perry said. “Every once in a while an item fuses technology with a real need, and this is one of the best I’ve seen. I think it has a great future.” About the size of a fat cell phone, SPOT Messenger combines a GPS device with a global satellite communications system. From almost anywhere in the world, users can track and identify their location precisely, and with a touch of a button, send preprogrammed messages, requests for non-emergency assistance and urgent signals that pinpoint the user’s location. “Lots of these will be purchased as gifts,” Perry said. “Just sending a signal that says where you are and that you’re all right provides invaluable peace of mind.” www.findmespot.com SteriPEN’s Kassie Stevens was busy during SHOT demonstrating the water purifier. He called back later and told me I was wrong; that his groups AirForce Airguns were running one quarter of an inch!” Hartsock said interest in and sales of airguns have exploded over the past few years, and “part of that is simply because AirForce Airguns display so well.
