So I’m curious since I trust both Duke and Captain Dye. Terry Gardner via e-mail Like you I am a great admirer of Dale Dye and the movies he has influenced. However, I’m afraid the facts and documentation just don’t bear out that M1903A3 rifles were used by US Marines at Guadalcanal. Our government did not approve Remington’s proposed changes to the basic ’03 and name them the ’03A3 until May 21, 1942 and, according to several research sources including books by the well known author Bruce Canfield, the first Model 1903A3 rifles were not delivered to the US Government until December 1942. The USMC 1st Division sailed for New Zealand early in June of that year and two of its three regiments invaded Guadalcanal on August 7, 1942. They shipped off the island in December 1942, just as ‘03A3s were reaching government hands. Furthermore in a lifetime spent avidly studying the firearms of WWII, I’ve never encountered a single photograph of Guadalcanal showing a Marine with an ’03A3 in his hands. They all had ’03s.—Mike V. Thank you from: 6/101CAB, 101st Airborne Division Combined Arms Room, KAF, Kandahar, Afghanistan ONLINE ADVERTISING MANAGER: Tracy Moore, More Pacific In regards to the article The Pacific I was very surprised that no mention was made of the BAR, more commonly known as the Browning Automatic Rifle, Cal. .30 M1918A1. This auto rifle was in every battle in the South Pacific and played a great part in every battle in WWII. Hank Berman Sgt. USMC, WWII and Korea No doubt about the part played by the BAR, but it might be better to ask the producers of the miniseries why its use was downplayed rather than Mike. Both Mike and I say, “Thanks for serving!”—Jeff John CLASSIFIED ADVERTISING: Lori Robbins, TEL: 203.662.9740, sigbuch@optonline.net TEL: 800.633.8001, FAX 858.605.0247, classads@fmgpublications.com FMG EAST COAST SALES: Sig Buchmayr, Buchmayr & Associates, 28 Great Hill Rd., Darien CT 06820, The Pacific In Mike Venturino’s article about HBO’s The Pacific, he said the only one mistake was Marines used 1903 Springfields not the 1903A3s. He also praised the military advisors otherwise for putting together a great accurate story. Well one of my other heroes is Captain Dale Dye USMC (ret). His company takes actors prior to filming and run them through “boot camp” where they learn to be soldiers. In his short write up regarding The Pacific he directly mentioned the 1903A3 as 6 CUSTOmER SERViCE www.gunsmagazine.com SUBSCRIPTION SERVICES . . . . . . . . . . . . 858.605.0252 EDITORIAL . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 858.605.0243 PRODUCTION. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 858.605.0216 BOOKS/MERCHANDISE. . . . . . . . . . . . . . . 888.732.2299 General Counsel/Legal Affairs: Steele N.
