FORM, FUNCTION, & kILLER LOOkS! SPEAkoUT #5: Confuse plinking with practice: There isn’t a range in my area where you can move, verbalize and practice tactics. I personally don’t have 1,000 acres to set up my own shooting range so that one is pretty much out. #6: Never train with a tactical instructor: One response to this is money. I don’t know of any “tactical instructor” who offers free classes. #8: Don’t use a timer: “A lot of what’s involved in tactics and decisionmaking is not measureable by bullet placement or a timer.” If these things are not measurable by a timer then why do I need one? “You need to achieve standards reflecting reality.” Whose standards and whose reality? When it comes down to it the so-called standards and reality will be dictated by the situation, not by an instructor’s criteria that you must do a certain number of rounds within a certain area in a certain amount of time. Jeff Via email Jeff, I think a key thing to remember here is don’t count the reasons you can’t do something but rather find the ways to accomplish it. You’ll find we’re very consistent in what we recommend when it comes to defensive shooting, tactics and equipment. What Ralph says are the very basics, and yes, as frustrating as it may be, the specifics can and do often change according to a person’s needs. You’re already doing one of the best things to do: reading about what you need to be thinking about. Now, some specifics. Can’t shoot and move at your range? Buy an inert blue gun like your own carry gun and “shoot and move” with it in the garage. Get a couple of our Clint Smith DVDs on the basics and practice them. Ammo questions? We’ve said this many times and I’ll continue to repeat it: There’s no magic ammo. Virtually any name-brand ammo today manufactured for “personal defense” (usually marked right on the box) will work fine. The rest is simply marketing. Go to www.americanhandgunner.com/insidertips and scroll down to watch my short video on stopping power. While you’re there, take a look at some of the other videos. I cover all sorts of basic things, including how to draw that new blue gun safely during practice draws, trigger control, sight picture, etc., and it’s all free to watch. As far as timing does, it’s like most things. Unless you “compete” against something to keep improving, there’s no way to tell if you’re really improving.
