BETTERSHOOTING Dave Anderson This conversion unit for Glock pistols from Advantage Arms allows plinking and training with inexpensive .22LR ammunition. It’s very well made and in testing proved reliable and accurate. Shooting gear CED Millennium Competition/ The CED Millennium chronograph. he Ruger .22 autopistol isn’t the easiest pistol to disassemble and reassemble, but my Rugers are so darn reliable I only take them down for cleaning about every second year, and I forget the process between cleanings. A company called Majestic Arms makes a neat accessory to make the job easier. It’s called the Speed Strip and consists of two components: a replacement hammer, and a 2-piece bolt stop pin to replace the standard 1-piece pin. Currently there are versions to fit the MK I and II and another version to fit the MK III (in both cases including the 22/45 variations) and the price is $49.95. There is also a 3.2 version which will fit any of the three versions and includes a hammer pivot bushing; price at present is $61.95. Installation requires detail stripping of the pistol, and removing and replacing cross pins. It isn’t overly difficult if you have the time and some simple tools. Majestic Arms can also install the Speed Strip for a fee of $40 plus $13.95 S&H if you send in your Ruger grip frame, mainspring housing and one magazine. Once installed, the Speed Strip bolt stop pin can be removed with an Allen wrench, allowing the bolt to be removed for cleaning, and the bore to be cleaned from the chamber. I installed one in a 22/45 model and found it works as claimed. t M odern chronographs are accurate, convenient, and moderately priced. For anyone who shoots competitively, or who reloads, a chronograph is virtually a necessity. Over the last decade or so the chronograph I’ve used most is a CED Millennium. It’s not the cheapest available, nor the most expensive. I like it because it’s so handy and easy to use, not to mention accurate and reliable. The chronograph unit along with skyscreens, folding skyscreen bar and diffusers all pack neatly in a range bag. Setup takes hardly more than a minute. The unit does all the functions we’ve come to expect; storing strings of fire, calculating average, extreme spread, standard deviation, IPSC and IDPA power factors. Though I haven’t tried them infrared screens are available for indoor use or when light levels are low. Continued on page 78 CHRONO When the Majestic Arms Speed Strip kit has been installed, an allen wrench is used to remove the bolt stop pin, allowing the bolt to be easily removed for cleaning, and the bore to be cleaned from the chamber. Incidentally the pistol on left has checkered maple grips. Majestic Arms makes this handy kit for Ruger .22 autopistols. It consists of a 2-piece bolt stop pin and a replacement hammer. Original parts are also shown. 20 WWW.AMERICANHANDGUNNER.COM • MAY/JUNE 2011
