American Handgunner Jul/Aug 2011 Digital Edition - Page 97

GUNNYSACK Roy Huntington lASERMAx GENESIS O kay, this is something new. While flashlights have used rechargeable battery packs for decades, LaserMax is the first to apply the technology to a railmount laser. Called the Genesis (for obvious reasons …), it’s basically a highly visible, pulsating green laser only weighing 1.4 ounces, you can slip onto virtually any rail, but it’s at home on an auto pistol. The real attention-getter (aside from the green laser) is the fact the unit has a builtin rechargeable battery, charged via a universal micro USB port that plugs into a wall-charger. Once in place (here it’s on Springfield’s cool new Compact XDM 3.8), the laser has dual “tap-on/tap-off” activation switches, one on either side, keeping things neatly ambidextrous. The Genesis also has an automatic 10 minute shut-off feature so you don’t lose ’yer charge by accident. The unit can be easily zeroed with an included hex wrench. Run-time is 2.5 hours of continuous use, and it takes about 2.5 hours to recharge with the included wall charger. LaserMax says you should recharge about every four months to make sure things stay up and running. When the laser gets to the point where there is approximately 5 minutes of battery life left, the laser will pulse at a slower rate to tell you to recharge it. This is one of the very first units shipped, and I left it charged for about six weeks before I had to write this. It turned right on and was as bright as ever, even though it had been played with and shot a good deal on various handguns. Interestingly enough, the cats agreed the green laser is as fun as the red one, so that’s something to keep in mind too if you need a good excuse to buy it. We liked several things about the Genesis: The rechargeable system worked and was convenient, the green laser was dramatically more visible than a red one, it was wellconstructed and fit the rails we tried — and it has only two controls, on and off, and you can reach ’em with either hand. Simple is always best, eh? Costs about $259 at MSRP.
