The Same — only Different I n the “Old World” the fight against bad guys has escalated fiercely, especially with terrorist attacks. European police and SWAT units continue to upgrade their equipment to meet these new threats, just as their peers in the States do. But what’s different “over there” and how do they handle things differently? Police pistols in Europe are nearly 100 percent 9mm Lugers. There’s no .357 SIG, .40 S&W or .45 ACP. While many might argue it, actual analysis of real gunfights reveals the metric 9x19, invented by Georg Luger in 1902, can do the job on the One uncommon feature of the SIG P250 is the special trigger housing holding the serial numbered main part of the service pistol. streets. Nobody can dupe the principles of ballistic and with any handgun or rifle caliber, effective hits are always the best way to go. Modern 9mm loads with high-performance bullets are performing well for European police. European defensive cartridge counter-parts to US ammunition (like Hornady XTP, Remington Golden Saber or Speer Gold Dot) are called Fiocchi EMB, MEN Quick Defense or RUAG Action 1 to Action 5. A modern 9mm police cartridge like the RUAG Action 5 features a 94-gr. solid, hollow point bullet made from special ductile brass with a plastic tip cover. In the past the old 124-gr. FMJ ammunition was good for a lot of problems in real life, especially with over-penetration. In the arsenals of European SWAT teams the legendary Heckler & Koch MP5 in all its variations is still a big player, but a lot of agencies are switching to PDWs (Personal Defense Weapons) in small sub-calibers (like the compact FN P90 in 5.7x28mm and the HK MP7 in 4.6x30mm). This helps them deal with heavily armed criminals equipped with ballistic body armor. Besides the dominating MP5, shortbarreled Modern Defensive Rifles in 5.56x45 NATO, such as the SIG SG 550, HK G36, HK 416 or Steyr AUG — sometimes in combination with frangible ammunition — are also favorites.
